The effort you pour into something makes you value it more — often beyond what it's objectively worth. We love the wobbly bookshelf we assembled and the plan we built ourselves, partly because we made them.
The IKEA effect: we place a disproportionately high value on things we partially created ourselves — the labor we invest makes the result feel more valuable than it objectively is.
Dan Ariely's experiments found people would pay substantially more for IKEA furniture they'd assembled themselves than for the identical pre-built item, and rated their own clumsy origami as nearly as good as an expert's. The act of building it inflated its worth in their eyes. He named it the IKEA effect: our own labor makes things feel more valuable, sometimes far beyond their real quality.
It's partly the effort itself (we justify the work by valuing the result), partly ownership, and partly the small pride of competence. Useful when it builds attachment — people love what they help create, which is why co-designed plans, customized products, and 'some assembly required' all deepen commitment. But it distorts judgment: you overrate your own strategy, defend the messy system you built, and resist a better off-the-shelf solution precisely because you didn't make it. The sweat is real; the extra value is partly in your head.
Two uses. To get buy-in — from a team, a customer, yourself — let people help build the thing; their effort becomes attachment. And to judge your own work honestly, discount for the IKEA effect: ask what a stranger who hadn't built it would think, or what you'd pay for it if someone else had made it. Your effort earned you pride; it didn't necessarily earn the thing extra quality.
It quietly biases every judgment of your own work — your plan, your code, your business, your home project — making 'I built it' feel like 'it's good,' which is exactly when an honest outside view is most valuable.
It's not 'never value your own effort' or 'always buy off-the-shelf.' Things you build often genuinely are better-fitted to your needs, and the pride of making something is real and worthwhile. The bias is the EXTRA, unearned value the effort adds — separate that from the genuine merit by imagining someone else had made it.
