A worker shaves two seconds off a step; tomorrow someone else removes a wasted motion. No single change is impressive. The accumulation is.
It works because of two human truths big leaps ignore. First, large changes trigger resistance and fear — they're hard to start and easy to abandon — while a change small enough to feel trivial slips past that resistance. Second, small improvements compound: 1% better, repeated, curves upward over time (the same engine as compound interest). Dramatic overhauls also tend to revert; tiny changes, woven into routine, stick. The tortoise's steady pace beats the hare's heroic sprint precisely because it never stops.
