Decision fatigue: the more decisions you make, the more you deplete a shared, limited pool of mental energy — so later in the day or after many choices, your decisions get lazier, more impulsive, or avoided entirely.
Baumeister's research found that self-control and decision-making draw on the same finite resource, and it depletes with use. A famous study of parole judges found prisoners were far more likely to be granted parole early in the day or right after a break — and far less likely just before lunch, when the judges were depleted. Tired deciders default to the safe 'no.' Same judges, same cases; the difference was how many decisions they'd already made.
As the tank drains, two failure modes appear. You get impulsive — grabbing the candy at the checkout (placed there for exactly this reason), saying yes to the upsell, snapping at someone. Or you get paralyzed — avoiding the decision, deferring, picking the default just to stop choosing. Either way the quality drops. It's why shopping while tired wrecks budgets, why big talks go badly at the end of a long day, and why endless trivial choices (what to wear, what to eat) quietly tax the decisions that actually matter.
The move is to spend the tank wisely. Make important decisions early, when you're full. Reduce trivial choices by routinizing them — same breakfast, a simple wardrobe, default plans — so you save energy for what counts (this is why some people 'wear the same thing every day'). Batch similar decisions, take real breaks (food and rest genuinely restore it), and never make a big call when you're drained. Protecting your best decisions means refusing to waste the battery on small ones.
Your judgment isn't constant — it degrades as you decide, so without managing the tank you'll make your worst calls exactly when you're most depleted, on autopilot, without noticing.
It's not 'you have a fixed daily quota, so stop deciding.' The resource recovers with rest, food, and breaks, and beliefs about your own stamina matter too. The practical core is robust regardless of the lab debate: decision quality degrades when you're tired, so protect big calls for fresh moments and cut needless small ones.
