Every habit runs the same three-step loop: a cue triggers a routine that delivers a reward. Spot the loop and you can redesign it.

5 examples of the habit loop

  1. The afternoon cookie

The cue is 3pm boredom, the routine is walking to the cafe, the reward is the social break — not the sugar.

  2. Checking your phone

A buzz (cue) pulls you to unlock and scroll (routine) for a hit of novelty (reward), dozens of times a day.

  3. The gym streak

Laying out your kit the night before (cue) makes the morning workout (routine) almost automatic.

  4. Stress smoking

A tense moment cues stepping outside; the real reward is the pause and the breath, which a walk can replace.

  5. Toothpaste tingle

Brands added a minty tingle as the reward so the loop — wake, brush, fresh mouth — would crave completion.

How to spot it in yourself

You'll forget most of this by next week.

That's just how memory works. Lock the habit loop in with a 5-minute active-recall session — spaced repetition, no signup.
